NESCO: Food Dehydrators Made in the USA

It seems every year my garden gets a little bit (maybe a big bit) bigger. I like to enjoy my garden year round so I preserve it as much as possible by canning, freezing, and dehydrating the bounty. It was only about 2 years into growing our garden when I started looking at food dehydrators made in the USA.

I chose the NESCO FD-75PR 5 Tray Food & Jerky Dehydrator. It’s priced right in the middle and comes with 5 trays. Comparatively, most other NESCO dehydrators come with 4 trays. When the harvest started coming in faster than I could preserve it, I bought more trays right away. My dehydrator is expandable to 12 trays so I bought 3 sets of Add-a-Trays giving me a total of 11. A 12th would be nice but I would have ended up with an extra tray. I also purchased 6 sets of Clean-a-Screens with 2 in each set and 1 set of Fruit Roll Sheets with 2 per set.

I make our own homemade spices most often. We grow a variety of hot peppers and hanging them to dry in our humid summer climate never worked out. Now I just cut them up, place them on the Clean-a-Screens, and dehydrate the peppers in my NESCO. When they’re finished, I grind them up and store them in Mason Canning Jars.

Another favorite to dehydrate in my NESCO dehydrator is bananas. Obviously, I don’t grow my own bananas in Ohio (but I sure do wish). It seems if I buy one bunch of bananas, they’re gone in a day. If I buy 2 bunches, they turn brown on the counter. But none of our overripe bananas ever go to waste so it’s ok. When they start to brown, I throw them in the freezer to make banana bread or dry them in the dehydrator. I can’t express how delicious slightly overripe dried bananas are.

Strawberries are another good one. They go bad in the fridge so quickly. If I note that we aren’t going to eat them fast enough, I freeze them for smoothies or make strawberry candy. Strawberry candy is just dehydrated strawberries. I tried the 200-degree oven trick a handful of times before getting my dehydrator and it never worked. The strawberries were never completely dehydrated no matter how long I left them in the oven. They come out perfectly when I use the dehydrator.

It seems the list of foods I can preserve with my NESCO is endless. I make fruit rolls for our son, jerky for Don, and zucchini chips for me. I dry chamomile and echinacea for tea, yarrow for pain relief, mint & stevia for baking, and so much more.

Best of all, it’s easy to use. Just cut the food up, line it in the trays, select the setting, and let it do its thing. I don’t have wasted fruits and vegetables and have another option for winter food storage.
